Shane McDaniel has played music since 1992, and has been an instructor for over 15 years including 11 years at Firehouse. He describes himself as “self-taught with the aid of instructors,” and that also describes his attitude toward private instruction. He sees the teacher’s role as that of a facilitator and trouble-shooter for the student. He gives his students access to a musical vocabulary and provides a solid foundation for self-teaching once students are well versed in the fundamentals.

Stylistically, Shane began his musical life as a rocker, but his interest in the progressive rock and jazz-fusion of the early 70’s (King Crimson, Yes, Jethro Tull, etc.) soon prompted him to explore more diverse waters and he spent more of his time practicing classical guitar and learning music theory. Most recently he has cultivated an emphasis on steel-string acoustic instrumental fingerpicking. Although a flexible instructor, Shane insists that his students attain a degree of mastery of basic musical elements as they apply to the guitar and encourages exposure to multiple styles of music as he feels this is highly conducive, if not essential, to developing a unique musical voice.

Shane enjoys instructing at all levels, and is especially experienced and skilled at teaching beginners.
