Johnny McGowan defines the term ‘working class’ musician. Having started banjo at the age of 5 he began putting on living room concerts for the neighborhood kids on guitar at 9. He decided to start taking lessons and getting serious at age 13 when his stepfather, a truck driving singer/songwriter, gave him his real first guitar for his birthday. “I remember seeing this ad in a guitar magazine,” he recalls. “It said ‘While they partied, you practiced. Now it’s your turn.” I thought to myself, yeah.. that’s me.

After attending the University of Tennessee at Knoxville where he studied under renowned jazz educator Jerry Coker, Johnny moved to Atlanta GA in 1991 and made music his career. “When it comes to your passion,” He states, “it choses you. You don’t chose it.” Having 7 years teaching experience prior to joining the Firehouse Guitar & Music team, as well as touring the United States, plus countless studio recordings, Johnny can truly be called a Master Teacher. Johnny is well versed in rhythm, blues, country twang, rockabilly, rock and roll.

Having appeared the cover of the Creative Loafing as well as articles in Southern Performer, Stomp and Stammer, the Red and Black in Athens, Chappel Hill Chronicle, Johnny has made his name in the Atlanta area. He has graced the stage with Bo Diddley, Wilson Picket, The Blasters, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Unknown Hinson, Agent Orange, Mastadon, Tinsley Ellis, Buddy Guy, Jimmy Vaughn, Atlanta Rhythm Section, members of the Rolling Stones backup band, and many more. He has also recorded with Paul Shaffer from the David Letterman Show, Will Lee (the most recorded musician ever on bass and vocals), Lenny Picket from Tower of Power and also leader of the SNL band, among others.
